About

I’ve always been drawn to working with a three dimensional element in my work as an outgrowth of my interest in architecture and sculptural form. Those non-objective, non-figurative forms and relationships present me with exciting and pleasurable relationships to be deeply contemplated. The relationships of shape, form, space, texture, material, color, are everything to me, not in a loud brash way, but in a poetic, quiet, slow way.
My process begins with the character of the support, in most cases wood, a choice made initially to work with or against a given texture, color, and pattern. The wood is not hidden or covered over. It is a presence. Cut paper is then used to begin the drawing and though the paper may dictate many compositional decisions, the final piece is oil paint, not collage. The paint is applied purposely very matte to create the fullest saturation of the color and presence of the material itself. I mix all colors with exacting precision, as the choice of color gives the emotional mood in the piece and must hit the right chord. They are not tube colors, and the palette knife application, rather than a gestural brushstroke, is again to enhance that physical presence of color. Chance and first inspirations often are a part of my process. Those choices feel striking, mysterious, and honest. I believe it is this that conveys the unique content of my work and why the apparently simple result carries weight, depth, and presence.
