Color & Weathered Wood
The weathered wood support in this work was used as a kind of shelf as well as a foil to the painted areas, setting it off the rich complex color choices with its neutral grey. Because the paint application is very matte and smooth, the rough texture of the wood also exists in contrast to that. The color choices are intuitive, playing with a syncopation of hue, value, and intensity. And the matteness of the paint gives it depth and saturation allowing the color to really be physically felt. The fascination of color mixing without using black admixtures was one of the great joys, amazements, and challenges of this work.
